In late May, I attended the conclave of the Fellows of the
IC2 Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. In June, I taught a course in Operations Management at Fujen Catholic University in Taipei, Taiwan, and gave lectures at National Chengchi University and National Tsinghua University. I was honored to be invited to return to Tsinghua as a visiting professor, but that will have to wait for a sabbatical year.
The Darwin’s birthday issue of
Technological Forecasting & Social Change included my
paper with Su, “Advances in evolution and genetics: Implications for technology strategy.” Yu-Shan and I were surprised to get a nice note from Howard Aldrich, one of the fathers of evolutionary organizational theory, saying he had found and enjoyed our paper.
Later in June I spent a week in Lisbon, evaluating research proposals for the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, the Portuguese national science foundation. From Lisbon I proceeded to my old hometown of Maastricht. There I met with the Aachen-based publisher of my new book,
Managing Innovation, Technology, and Entrepreneurship, which had been released in early June.
July brought a trip to Lima, Peru, where I delivered a commencement address and a few lectures at
CENTRUM, the business school of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Perú. And then Portugal for a second time, where I chaired a journal editors’ session at the
12th International Conference on Technology Policy and Innovation, and arranged a special edition of
Technological Forecasting & Social Change, featuring the conference’s best papers.
In August I presented a paper at
PICMET, the Portland International Conference on Management of Engineering and Technology, and repeated the journal presentation there. The conference gave an award to micro-lending pioneer and Nobel Laureate Mohammed Yunus. As former awards chair for the conference, I had the pleasure of meeting Yunus’ daughter Monica and her fiancé – both opera singers in New York – who were present to accept the award on Yunus’ behalf.
Finally, I taught a course in Leadership in Guatemala City.
In between these gigs, I visited parents in Florida and Illinois. A summer rich in experiences and frequent flyer miles!
